Argh! It would have to be the day before the Armadillo Dash.
5:04p, 03/04/10
I'll be there!
10:29p, 03/04/10
I think it is going to be the Armadillo Walk for me this year due to Beerfest....

I know I'm going to be the debbie downer here, but I still want to go to Beerfest even though I kind of find the list underwhelming. There are so many more beers just from Texas that could be there and I feel they are really missing a chance to be something special. To be honest, the list seems like something that the local AB/Miller Coors distributors came up with. Flame away BCS residents...

Just so you know, they have alot of beer from Victory and Brooklyn that I have not had. I do really want to try these as they are not generally locally available.

I’m in, just purchased my tickets online. Hope they have Yuengling. yuengling.com

You raised an interesting point, TexAgg. We are going - and will have a table there. (We're giving away coupons and sampling snacks - not selling anything.)

We were invited because of our build-your-own 6pk of beer program. The organizers said we stock the largest % of the beers that will be represented (75% to 80%) that they could find locally. I wanted to get to 100% so I had our people work on it.

It turns out that almost all of the beers we don't have are not available in our region (but they are available in San Antonio or Houston, etc.)

What does that mean? It means you should enjoy the variety at Beerfest because you will not be able to find all of it locally. As it should be, Beerfest is a unique opportunity to sample an otherwise unavailable variety of beers. (Selfishly, I wanted you to be able to get them ALL from us anytime, but the reality is that would significantly take away from this event, wouldn't it?)

There are THOUSANDS of beers being brewed all over Texas and the nation - so, no, they will not all be represented at this event.

Still, I give the organizers credit for what they HAVE put together. I'm sure they had to start with the larger distributors in order to acheive a respectable variety of labels. From there they can start working on the smaller (and more local) labels to make it even more unique. I'm sure they will do that because they are always working to improve their other events each year.

This is only the third year of this event and, even though I am not a beer drinker, I think they have created a heck of an program. I'm looking forward to seeing people react to the various things they sample. (We will bring our list and let you know if we have your favorites in stock.)

No flame, and a year ago I would have agreed. But this year they have done a great job of working in some Texas beers (Real Ale, St. Arnold's) and expanding their overall list. This event has grown quite a bit in three years. I'm heading out there to watch a few of the bands and eat fajitas, even though I can't drink.

Villager -

Do you have a vanilla porter in stock? I've been craving one ever since I saw this. I remembered I had some kind of vanilla porter at one point but I can't find one anywhere in town.

Thanks for the answers guys. I was hoping to see some of the others like Rahr from Ft. Worth (I know Specs has this), 512 from Austin, etc...

I did see there are some of the Pete's, Stone Brewery and Dogfish head which is awesome. I guess what I was really talking about is getting some of the non-standard brews from some of these (& locals), stuff that I can't really get in stores. There are some in there that I can claim I haven't tasted though, so I am happy about that.

Villager,
I am going to have to go back by your store again and check out the beer section! It's out of the way for me, but beer can make me drive those few extra miles. I just wish we could get more beers here, and I know that has nothing to do with whether or not you actually want to sell it and everything to do with what the distributors want to carry (and not make their lead brand AB or MillerCoors angry with them).

Besco,

We can't get Yuengling here becuase we are outside of the distribution area. I think Florida is as close as it gets. I was in DC over Christmas and I am so surprised that a good, local beer like that was still only $9.99 in the stores! I guess having the oldest brewery in the US means that stuff is paid for...

EDIT: to say $9.99 for a 12 pack, crazy since Shiner is now $16.49 or so here...

TexAgg, I agree with you that the beer list isn't very good, but it is better than what they've had the last 2 years. Considering we don't live a city or state that's very good for beer, it's not too bad.

And the closest state where Yuengling is distributed is Alabama.

Hey Bored... I pulled up the link you sent and, just below the name of the beer, it says "not available." So I'm going to have to go ahead and tell you that it is not available. We have some other Dog Head beers that ARE available...

Bored, try the Breckenridge Brewery Vanilla Porter. I'm pretty sure I've seen it at Spec's before. Their website says they have a local distributor.
10:52a, 03/05/10
what's beerfest?
11:03a, 03/05/10
Villager - I was just hoping for any kind of vanilla porter.

Cosmo - Thanks for the lead.
11:46a, 03/05/10
I know, Bored. Sorry. I was being a smart arse - and I was stalling because I wasn't in the store and knew the person I needed to ask wasn't either.

We don't have a vanilla porter in stock but I will ask Mandy to check into it. The only porter I saw when I checked just now is a limited edition Pipeline Porter with 100% Hawiian Kona Coffee.

Oh - Someone mentioned Real Ale and St. Arnold. We have beers from both.
2:00p, 03/05/10
Vanilla porter sounds good. I think you just picked one of the next beers that I'm brewing. I also want to make a maple brown as well.
3:02p, 03/05/10
I have a bunch of Genral Adm tickets at the restaruant. It is a free event however having a ticket will save you some time at the entrance. We will give them away today to folks that come in and ask for them. Looking forward to it myself!

TexAgg,

You think I could observe your next brewing session? I've been wanting to get into it but would like to watch the process before opening up my wallet.
5:18p, 03/05/10
I think we could arrange something. I am fairly new and have limited room so I do minimash, which is part grain part extract, so it is not as fancy as all-grain. It's not too bad to get started, but it leads to wanting to spend money to get better equipment. I have an order in now for some kits so it will be a couple of weeks until I can get it in and find time.
8:02p, 03/05/10
Here's a preview of the event!

Can't wait to see everybody there!

Prost!

whats the best way to get there? I know parking is limited at the ball park. I heard there are shuttles from Northgate going out there...is that the way to go?
10:40p, 03/05/10
The Costco set is not bad for a starter, but after a few batches I have grown to like glass fermenters. I have most of that set if someone really wanted to give it a try.
12:34a, 03/06/10
I'm going shuttle from O'Bannon's.

you can park out there, but since I live closer to Northgate I'm going that route.

In the mean time, STAFF, HOW ABOUT ABORTING THIS THREAD HIJACK WITH TALK OF SELF BREWING (as much as I support it)
