Please read the following if you are thinking of going to Taste Of China Inc. I sent this letter to the health department's website.
To whom it may concern, This evening 11/19/09 my wife, our 16 month old son, and I attempted to eat dinner at the Taste Of China Inc in College Station. When we first went inside it was very dark and the floor was very wet. They had cones and signs up, I thought they maybe had just mopped the floor. When we were seated at our booth it smelled like urine so my wife and I asked the hostest if we could sit somewhere else. She lead us to the other side of the room. There too it smelled like urine and the floor was very wet. We went to the last lighted area of the resturant and it didn't smell as bad and the floor wasn't as wet. We sat there and tried to eat but couldn't finish our first plate because the smell was overwhelming. We got up and paid at the register. The lady asked us if everything was alright and wanted to know why we were leaving so soon. I asked her what had spilled on the floor. She told me there was no special tonight. I asked her why the floor was wet and she told me there is no smoking. My wife told her, "IT STINKS IN HERE." She said that is the food that we smell. My wife said, not it stinks and the floor is all wet, she said they had just cleaned the floor. I told her there is standing water and the floor drains are overflowing. I'm a Lic Journeyman Plumber in the State of Texas, and I know for a fact that the floor drains in a resturant are NOT supposed to be overflowing! I took her back and showed her. I told her the floor drains should not have water coming out of them. I showed her the serving areas, there was standing water underneath them. I showed her the carpeted area, it's lower than the rest of the resturant. The carpet was soaked, which by the way was the area that was closed off, no lights turned on. She said she was sorry our meal wasn't good. We paid our bill and left. Please have someone check into this. They should be closed. People should not waste their money even attempting to go there. Thank you for your time.

They get health inspections regularly, they were having an off night I guess. Let the health inspector take care of it. I've never had a bad experience there.

I called in a complaint to the Health Dept about Taste of China several months ago. When we went the floor was very dirty, food particles everywhere. What prompted the call were the two roaches that crawled around on the wall next to the booth we were sitting in.
Shame too, the food is really good.

This reminds me of the bar scene in Boogie Nights.

Refresh my memory about what transpires in that scene.

I too have reported Taste of China several months ago with the Brazos Health Dept. I receeived a call from one of their agents telling me that they will check them out and he was supposed to email me with the outcome. Well....I never heard a thing from this person. I'm starting to wonder if our Health Dept. agents might be accepting a pay-off from this facilities. The woman's restroom was disgusting and nasty. And that building does have a foul oder to it. I have since decided not to ever eat there anymore!!!!

i think this is the real issue here

Yikes, I don't think that I could have stayed and ate. When I go into a restaurant and the odor is there, I leave.
I have reported restaurants to the Health Department before.
I was told that they can't be everywhere and they appreciated me reporting what I saw. This time it was not an odor, but another issue. The Health Department called me back and said that they did not go to the Manager about the problem, they went directly to the owner.
There is no reason in the world for filth.

As a food service employee myself, I can say that "Regular" health inspections are only about once a year, sometimes longer. A lot can change in a year...

And that's one of the better Chinese restaurants.
Just wait until you come across a Chinese restaurant where employees scrape uneaten food off of the plates back onto the buffet.

|
One of the better ones? Are you f'ing kidding me?
ToC has always been a dump. I wouldn't let my dog eat there, much less another human being.
If you have any respect for yourself, eat elsewhere.

When Marvin Zindler did his restaurant reports, one thing was very clear -- Chinese restaurants easily accounted for a far greater number of citations for health violations than the percentage of Chinese restaurants in Houston.

Just how long do you define "always"? When was the first time you ever ate there?
|
|
|
Every time I've been to ToC it's always been fairly disgusting...
The first time I went a few years ago, a friend of mine found a roach IN her food... (It was a bit ironic that she was Chinese).

I stopped eating there years ago.

This is funny because I figured everyone knew that only college students ate there. Well, college students and those not particularly concerned with cleanliness. I moved to CS in 1999. I think I ate there twice before ToC moved to the banned establishments list.
And lest you think I'm just a neat freak, my favorite TexMex restaurant in CS is Los Cucos.

T Jins on 158 has always been very clean and very good....no buffet but there portions could fill anyone up...

My first experience there was 5 years ago as a junior. Agreed that T. Jin's is da' bomb!

I have a weak nose. If I walk in a restaurant and detect foul odors I leave. I quit going to TofC five years ago. Too bad. They had great soup and spicy chicken dishes.

sounds to me like their main sewer drain was backed up if water was present, however, it wouldn't have smelled like urine, it would have smelled like poop. Also thinking that the mop water that they used wasn't fresh or the mop head hadn't been replaced in awhile.
Either way, it is impossible to enjoy a meal when you a sight or smell repulses you.
Regular Health Inspections are done on all restaurants every 6 months but are also done whenever a complaint is filed.

We almost always order from J&J Asian Bistro on Rock Prairie near Must Be Heaven. It's always extremely clean on the inside (granted, I haven't been into the kitchen), the food is served (and delivered!) piping hot, and the delivery service is prompt and friendly. T Jin's is our Plan B location.
After taking Food Toxicology and Safety at A&M, my wife and I avoid buffets at all costs.

At all times, one can ask to go back to the kitchen to check it out.
First time that I knew of someone who checked out the kitchen of a restaurant was when we were up in Fort Worth and invited out by a friend and he asked if he could check out the kitchen. I would never have thought that just anyone could do that.

+1. Chef Cao's has huge portions and it's pretty cheap too.

IDK about customers being allowed back into the kitchen. I know that the health department has rules about what has to be worn by employees in the kitchen area and I can't see why this wouldn't apply to anyone and everyone.

Haven't been there in at least five years. I couldn't justify going down there for that food.
