I was driving to class today and noticed a new bar was opening where The Library used to be. I don't recall the name, it was something like Basil Whipple's Pub or something like that.. does anyone have any info?
3:37p, 11/19/09
It's been there for over a month.

Haven't been there myself. Heard it was a popular frat hang out.

It's not going to be an "urban" bar, like The Library was?
4:12p, 11/19/09
No, it is "rural" since its direct across from TAMU.
4:14p, 11/19/09
Basil whatever is actually pretty nice inside. Not a fan of frats either, but it was pretty relaxing. No signs of cargo shorts or crooked ballcaps, and the drinks were reasonably priced, so I'd give it the all clear.

On another note, isn't that new place open next to the parking garage? Cedar Lane I think is the name? Saw the doors open last night and it looked like it might be open or opening soon. Any word?

Stereotyping bars as "frat hangouts" never gets old on TexAgs....no, the new bar isn't a dump like Fitzwillies where you wear a t-shirt and old bluejeans, it's a normal bar like every other college town has like the Corner and so on.

I think some of you assume anyone that dresses remotely nice at northgate is a frat guy.
4:19p, 11/19/09
Cedar Lane is a Cool place. Nice patio and the owner was really awesome. Nice to be in a place that cares about your business.
4:21p, 11/19/09
Wearing t-shirts and jeans to Northgate.

The fact that you have to dress up to go to some places at Northgate shows how pathetic new army is.
4:53p, 11/19/09
HA, you gotta be kidding me.

What satisfaction do you get out of putting on a t-shirt vs a polo? It literally takes the exact same amount of time.

I'm proud to be a part of new army if that means dressing like a normal person dresses when they go to a bar.
5:04p, 11/19/09
T-shirt and jeans isn't normal bar attire? Since when do you HAVE to dress up for a night out on Northgate? Personally, I think its ridiculous for any college town bar or club to have a dress code, but I guess the owner can do whatever he/she wants...

I hardly think attire is enough to distinguish one group from another anyway. Saying frat boys all dress a certain way is just stupid too... Besides, its possible to make any outfit look stupid if the person wearing it acts like a complete ******.
5:11p, 11/19/09
fine, I'll be in a tshirt and jeans at the Chicken having a beer, while you put on your polo, slacks, hair gel and makeup, drinking a Mojito. And I will make fun of you all night long while you do it too.
5:13p, 11/19/09
Theres much more to the "frat" or NG look than just a sideways hat.. you gotta have a tat, earrings, and have bigger arms than legs, not to mention you gotta have a fruity "I'm hot sh*t" swag going on..

Thats why I stay away from NG now, too many tools

008's idea of a good time...

haha classic!
5:48p, 11/19/09
For the record I'm not in a frat..I don't see why wearing a polo and jeans is a big deal to some of you, but to each their own.

I think Sentinel and I could get along. Why someone would want to dress up to go drink beer is beyond me.
2:43a, 11/20/09
haha.... I know who would dress up to go to a bar?? I mean, what girl in their right mind would be attracted to someone clean shaved, dressed nice, smelling good, and demonstrating class.... haha... And some guys wonder why they are single?? really??
3:12a, 11/20/09
So if you wear a t-shirt to NG, you're automatically single? Because no woman would date a guy who wears t-shirts to bars!

Seriously, I'm not saying dressing up has no place at NG, I dress up on occasion...but sometimes I just go up there to get a beer with some friends, I don't exactly need a tux for that...

My friend Tammy runs Basil Whippet's and Apothocary. Basil Whippet's is the downstairs sports bar. Apothocary is the upstairs bars. It is more of a lounge with large couches and they have Absinth. It's a great place IMO!

No one said anything about hygiene and class, we were talking about dressing up.
1:03p, 11/20/09
I prefer to dress up to go to Northgate, but have been in tshirt and jeans and never felt out of place.

HOWEVER, I think there is a line to be drawn. my idea of dressing up to go to NG is a cute top, jeans, and heels. I rarely ever wear skirts--mostly because I don't want to plant my ass on one of those chairs without the barrier of denim. I'm not a fan of completely hooching yourself up like you're going out in NYC or LA. this is Texas, we wear jeans with our cute tops and heels.

TA008,

There is dressing nice. There is getting dressed up.

I wear khakis and a polo to the bird from time to time. That ALSO happens to be what I was wearing when I went to work.

But getting dressed up, changing clothes, etc, so that I can look THE SAME as other guys going out that night, that is the line. When you see 6 guys, all dressed the same with the same hair style, that is an issue.

You can have upscale/white collar bars and college dives and blue collar/working class bars. But most people around here want a place to go and hang out, blow off some steam and chit chat. How much do you "chit chat" at Gatsby's or Mad Hatter's?

The "frat" description is just what I heard from a fried, as I have never been there myself.

I'm probably bias because I prefer the atmosphere of the Chicken and FW.

But..
popped collar = frat.
Wearing a size S polo when you should be wearing a L = frat.
Seeing the light reflect off your gelled hair across the room = frat.
Looking unnaturally brown or even orange = frat.
Dressing like you should be going to a wedding rehearsal - consistently = frat.
Sporting your button up shirt - with at least the top 3 buttons undone = frat.

I know plenty of guys who are in a frat that don't fall into this category, but even they don't refer to themselves as "frat guys".

I don't understand the point of this argument. I've been to the chicken in a suit and I've been to vbar in a tshirt and flip flops. How I dress has nothing to do with who I am or what bar I go to. It has everything to do what I was already doing that evening whether it be working, tailgaiting, or having a nice dinner somewhere. Has it occured to you that some people dress a certain way regardless, whether they are going to a bar or going to a movie? It's pretty obtuse to just think that everyone gets dressed a certain way on a Friday night because they are going to a certain bar. This whole debate is fail.

Sure there's plenty of dbags and the like running around NG, but "frat" is a very specific style. For example, the picture posted on this thread was not frat at all. That's just the dbag look the young kids with tanning and gym memberships are doing nowadays. They aren't looking this way because NG requires it, they look that way because they like to look like tools. Nothing more.

Dude, go to Northgate tonight, any bar you want...If you see even ONE person with a popped collar I'll be surprised. No one does that s*** anymore, and in CS no one ever really did (thank God).

I think some of you assume a bar is a certain way and just never ever go in it.

Almost nothing on that list is "frat". The poster pic dudes are more like east coast guidos. Very very few people that dress like that in CS, at any bar.

Tell me what bar I can walk into and see it....Seriously, I really want to know.

Maybe you are right, I just know that I've never persoanlly seen more than MAYBE 1 person at NG in a given night with a popped collar.
