“The Fix That Wasn't In” by Inside Higer Ed on 10-22-09 http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2009/10/22/texas Texas A&M University chancellor, Mike McKinney freely admits in this article that he and the Board of Regents “fixed” the search committee for the vice president for research and when Murano backed out of their deal they wanted her fired. With a search for a permanent president of A&M underway, it makes me wonder if McKinney and the BOR have already determined who will be the president, just as they did when they picked Murano over the search committee’s recommendations!

I read this article, and it actually made my opinion of McKinney go lower, which I didn't think was possible.

Wow, I sort of feel the need to shower after reading that article.
How or why she left is not important.....I am glad she was gone. I did not want her (poorly) representing my university anymore.
Hope the next president is a good one.

McKinney is the worst single person in the world that is in any way affiliated with A&M

I respect Elsa Murano. She ultimately did the right thing but the resentful chancellor fired her. “McKinney's account reveals that he encouraged Murano to fill the position without faculty input or a search, that he viewed the search she ran as a sham designed to appease the faculty, and that he objected to the sham search in part because she turned it into a real search -- without a pre-ordained outcome.”

I always suspected there was dirty dealing in the University but wow, to admit this in an article shows the brazeness and how untouchable McKinney beleives he is. Also makes me wonder if there will be or is an investigation into these pork barrel projects and the funding of Perry's election fund. Murano doesn't exactly come out looking great either but not as bad as the other two. Bad Bull for the school all around. I'm sure this kind of thing goes on at a lot of Universities but why does it have to be A&M that it comes out about?

He was Gov Perry's chief of staff. The BOR and Chancellor are all Governor Goodhair grovelers. As long as we allow A&M to be Perry's playpen these things will continue to happen.

Yep, if Perry goes and a lot will change.
how can there not be any kind of backlash or uprising against this guy?
McKinney made me a Murano fan, well before this article.
Serious question - What would change if Perry and McKinney were no longer Governor and Chancellor?
Okay... I just read the article. WHY is McKinney still here playing Grand Puppeteer? But in reality, it's just a case of the "good 'ol boys network" at it again.

Yeah, because she's what was wrong with the University. McKinney has us looking pretty good through this all, doesn't he?

Perry is much too tangled up with every piece of this fiasco. Heaven help up when he stops being Governor. Not looking forward to having that slimy man as a neighbor.

Cdub06, I agree that McKinney sucks...
but I was a student under Murano when she was the Dean of College of Ag, she truly had no business in that position. Then she was further promoted to another position she had no business being in.
While she didn't run the university into the ground completely, she made a good start... BUT McKinney seems to be wanting to finish the job.
They both should be gone.

I would not be at all surprised if Loftin is named president, and Karan Watson (interim provost) is named provost.
What would change if Perry and McKinney were no longer Governor and Chancellor?
Any idea?
If Perry loses the primary he will be the next President of A&M. The job stays open until then for sure.

Do you have specifics or are you just blowing smoke? I feel a slight breeze under my skirt....

How do you figure? If Perry loses, the next gov would likely fire the current board and fill it with non-Perry cronies.
