I know the COCS is in the process of designing a skate park. Maybe the city could take advantage of the Skate Plaza Foundation which helps in the design, construction and promotion of skate parks, so they can be a destination for skateboarders nationwide. Could possibly turn into a revenue source for College Station. http://www.skateplaza.com/about/mission/[This message has been edited by duckdog (edited 11/3/2009 12:38p).]

If this was a viable source for revenue a private entrepreneur would have built one already.

Yeah! Like an ice skating rink.... Oh wait...
No offense to skaters but it is personal agendas that are ruining this city's finances and the councils reputation with their constituents.

Yeah, and I guess city parks and playgrounds are just a waste of money as well. You do realize that building things like parks, ponds, skateparks, pools etc are to attract people to settle in a city. They are amenities just like any neighborhood, subdivision or apartment complex offers to attract people. I love the idea of a skate park here. When we lived in Seattle, they were a huge hit and gave kids something to do and somewhere to ride their skateboards instead of on the streets and such.

If you are confident enough that a skate park is a viable option for this community, would you be willing to open one yourself? quote: Afterall, the city projects it will have a $1 million shortfall and the cost of the park is roughly $1 million. The city said the money was in the bank for the project and no funds would be diverted for other things.

Jelly, You are right. Amenities can attract people. However, there also should be a local demand. How many kids do you see skateboarding in your neighborhood? I can say that I have seen 1 and that was after last Xmas. Havent seen the board since a few months later. I am not interested in wasting money on something that will sit idle and require maintenance to possible attract someone from another part of the country where this is a big thing. We need to be able to cover basic civil services before tackling new projects. edit: OMG Bobo T Clown and I agree! [This message has been edited by SparkyDClown (edited 11/3/2009 1:53p).]

I have actually seen quite a few kids on skateboards in my neighborhood. Also, I have seen them at the Southwood Athletic Complex when I have played tennis there after work. I think it is a good idea for the city to have one.

Btw, I go past at least 2 skate boarders every day on campus.
|
|
|
I see several of them as well, both on campus, and at the Bryan skate park, as I live over by it.

which one of these, is not like the other... inflection is EVERYTHING! quote: You do realize that building things like parks, ponds, skateparks, pools etc are to attract people to settle in a city
it seems we hold opposite goals...

oh, and anyone attracted to a city by a retention pond doesn't know what they are for.
you know that big fountain across from the hilton on FM 60? yeah, it's not just for looks...

I really think these are "if you build it they will come" type facilities. The YMCA across from my house in Cypress always had a bunch of kids during the summer, and pretty heavily usage on evenings and weekends. It was in a solidly upper middle class neighborhood.
Here in Baytown, we have two, and both are used a lot. The kids really enjoy them and get a ton of use out of them.
These are great. They offer entertainment for kids who might not have the funds or inclination to participate in more expensive team sports. They give them a place to go where they aren't getting into trouble and can have a good time. IMO, they are every bit as valuable as bark parks, bike trails, and sports fields. I'm surprised that College Station, with as active a Parks Department as it has, has waited this long to build one.

I realize if there was big money to be made, that the private sector would build a skate park.
What I'm suggesting is that the COCS look into working with the Skate Plaza Foundation to construct a skate park that serves the local needs, as well as has the recognition of being a Rob Dyrdek (Pro Skateboarder)designed skate park. The fact that it would be tied to his foundation allows the opportunity to bring national & regional competitions and sponsorships to CS. Thus offering CS an opportunity to recoup the cost of construction.

I think we need a pogo stick arena.

How about a Wii Fit park?

Well said duckdog... some people who post on here look past and ignore the trees so they can analyze the rest of the forest...

The skate park is a $900,000+ (without the land price) facility that has no maintenance money set aside to care for the facility. They are going to charge field sports between $10 and $25 (headed to $40) a season for maintenance. Most of the people wanting the skate park were not from CS.

Let's make up a figure representing the number of active skateboarders in the City of College Station that would use a skate park. I'll start with a completely (and admittedly) un-researched number of 1000 active skateboarders.
So, with a cost of $1,000,000, we're spending $1000 per skateboarder. Honestly, if a skate park could benefit people so much, couldn't a privately funded group operate it better and more effeciently and provide a better product? This is the tenet of capitalism.

I'm willing to bet that there are more active target shooters in CS than skateboarders...
Why not build a public rifle range instead?

I dunno, have you been to a Council Meeting and asked for one? I seem to recall a bunch of kids and their parents going to a Council Meeting to ask for a skate park...

I think it should be noted, on the night of the ever popular RLC vote, that the funds for the skatepark were approved BY THE VOTERS.
It was an item brought by the community, went through several public meetings where the public was allowed to speak for or against, reviewed by a citizens committee before being brought to council for inclusion on the ballot. Once on the ballot, it was approved by the voters.

Just a thought.
Parkland is donated (extorted from developers) by the city through actual land or funds. Maybe instead of spending tax dollars for maintenance and improvements the residents that use the park could maintain it themselves and solicit local businesses for additional upgrades and equipment.

CoCS is partnering with Grindline for the design. www.grindline.com Last July a series of meetings were held to talk about location and design; the next round of meetings is next week (Monday and Tuesday) for Grindline to come back to us with their design. 979Represent will cover the meetings.

I am with TexasRebel! Great idea, especially with a section for bow hunters! God's Peace, Chuck

I want a paintball course. I don't paintball, but if there was a special night when the council and mayor were dressed up in Teletubbie costumes and set loose in the facility, I would gladly pay $20 to take a shot at them. Talk about a 'signature event'!

The skatepark was wrapped up with other parks improvements in the election. (12.9 Mil total) I venture to say if it had been a stand alone project it would not have made it.
